Training
The Red Cross offers CNA training programs during the day consisting of 164 hours of instruction at a cost of $1,900. You should contact your local chapter of the Red Cross for additional information about when the next program is being held.
It is important to note that you might come across many online opportunities for completing your training course, but none of the online CNA training programs in California are actually approved by the state. Taking these programs does not make you eligible for certification, or taking the examination.
Training Curriculum
CNA classes in California are broken down into segments, which have a certain number of hours associated with them. Here are the major topics that you can expect to be covered:

Certification Requirements
The State of California insists that candidates for the program be eligible only if they have reached the age of 16 and completed a program that has a minimum of 150 hours of instruction. They will also have to pass the licensing exam.
Both medical and physical exams are required in addition to the customary fingerprint and criminal background check to secure certification.
Examination
There are four testing centers available for you to take your Certified Nursing Assistant examination. The first three are nationally available and the last is a state approved testing vendor.
With the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC) you should book early, as space to complete the testing is not guaranteed and spaces are accommodated on a first come, first served basis.
The Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology is a non-profit that provides exams for the CNA program as well. You can find the application for the exam here. The cost for the exam is $210 for the written version or $240 if it is administered electronically. These costs are higher for international students.
The National Nephrology Certification Organization also offers examination as well as review and practice courses and recertification guidelines, in case your registration has lapsed and you need to take the exam again.
The California Dialysis Council also offers examination and you will need to be a registered member in order to apply.
Eligibility Requirements For Examination
In order to be eligible to take the exam, you must meet the following requirements:
- Successful completion of high school or high school equivalent or four years of full-time experience in your field;
- Completion of the applicable training program with both classroom and clinical experience;
- Completion of the Application for Certification Examinations along with the required fee
Licensing & Certification
The California Department of Public Health is responsible for the licensing and certification of Certified Nurse Aides in California. This ensures compliance with existing nursing regulations as well as those found in long-term care facilities, hospitals and nursing homes.
You must be certified by the state before you can begin working with patients in a healthcare setting. There are two forms that will need to be completed and remitted to the ATCS upon enrollment and they include the Application form and the second copy of the Request For Live Scan Services form.
