CNA Classes in Maine

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a challenging and worthwhile profession. In order to enroll in CNA classes in Maine you must first meet these requirements:

1. Completion of school up through 9th grade. No high school diploma or GED is required but proof of 9th grade completion is necessary.

CNA Classes in Maine and Certification Test

Once you are sure you meet the minimum requirements, you can enroll in a certified training program. Maine CNA programs require completion of 90 hours of classroom training, 20 hours of skilled laboratory work, and 70 hours of correlated, supervised clinical practice. This is close to double what it is in many other states.

The Maine Department of Education is responsible for providing location information for all programs. You can find a location near you by visiting their website here. Classes usually run during different times of the day and week so you’ll most likely be able to find a class that fits your schedule.

Upon completion CNA training in Maine, you are required by law to take a test which includes multiple choice (oral or written) and to perform a skills demonstration. You must pass both parts of the exam in order to become a certified CNA in Maine.

During the skills demonstration portion, you will show the skills that you have learned throughout the training program including personal safety, caring for elderly patients, emergency procedures, and/or other various basic CNA skills. Each skill must be witnessed by a Registered Nurse before it can be practiced by a CNA.

The CNA Registry in Maine

The CNA Registry lists all CNAs in Maine who through training, testing, and clinical work experience, have met the federal and state requirements to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant. There is no fee to be listed on this Registry.

You must be be listed on the CNA Registry in good standing in order to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of Maine. However, you are allowed to work as a CNA for up to 4 months in a long-term care facility while you are fulfilling the requirements for getting placed on the CNA Registry.

Certified Nursing Assistants are permitted only to work under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Therefore, they are not allowed to do private duty work in Maine.

Placing Your Name on the CNA Registry

In order to be placed on the Registry, you must provide official proof and documentation including:

1. A completed application form
2. Documentation of successful completion of a state approved CNA training program within the last two years
3. Documentation of successful completion of the Maine CNA competency test
4. A copy of your Certificate of Training
5. A copy of the criminal background check that was completed as part of your course application. You must have no criminal restrictions that prevent you from working as a CNA in Maine.

The Registry has 30 days to determine your eligibility for placement on the Registry after receiving your completed application form and all required documentation.

Once you are approved you will receive a confirmation letter indicating the date you are approved for placement on the Registry.

Minimum Requirements to Stay Active on the Registry

1. You must complete at least 8 hours of qualified employment every 24 months
2.  You must have no disqualifying annotations. A disqualifying annotation includes, but is not limited to, substantiated complaints of abuse/neglect, conviction of sexual assault crimes, and conviction of crimes towards a patient.
3. Renewing your listing when required (see below)

Once you have completed your training classes and program, completed the competency evaluation, and have been listed on the Registry, you are ready to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of Maine.
