A wonderful way to start a career in the medical field is to join the rapidly expanding field of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), especially in the state of Florida, where there are many opportunities available. CNAs in Florida serve a valuable role, working with the overall medical team to provide a safe environment for patients, assisting with assessing a patient’s overall health status, and facilitating aspects of daily living, such as bathing, feeding, and dressing. Further, many who choose to begin their career by getting a CNA certification often find rewarding opportunities available to them. So, if pursuing a career as a CNA sounds appealing to you, the following information may be helpful in taking your first step.

What is a Certified Nursing Assistant?

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) helps licensed nurses to provide care to patients or clients, especially regarding the aforementioned activities of daily living. Also, the CNA may gather data to assist the nurse in assessing the client. Such data typically involves checking a patient’s temperature, pulse, respiration, or even blood pressure and oxygen level. However, the most important aspect of the job is to observe changes in a patient and report any concerns. Of course, such monitoring carries with it responsibility, and your classroom training will provide you with a solid foundation to build the knowledge to become a competent and confident Certified Nursing Assistant. In the state of Washington, the certified nursing assistant is often referred to as nurse assistant – certified or NAC. This still refers to the same job description.

Washington State Regulations for CNA Certification

Washington state actually requires more coursework than required by the federal government for CNA certification. You will need to know and understand this in order to get certification in the state. Here are a few key things to know.

  • There are a total of 85 hours of coursework required for CNA certification in Washington. This coursework will include written class work and clinical hands on training. All work must be passed.
  • An additional class must be taken and passed that is a focus CNA course involving HIV and AIDS. This class must be taken in the state. In order to move on and schedule the exam, you must have a certificate showing you took the class.
  • The CNA certification exam is called the NAC exam in Washington State. You will need to pass this within three tries in order to get CNA certification. The exam consists of two parts as well: written and clinical. There will be a total of 25 skills covered on the exam. If you do not pass the exam on the third try, all CNA classes will have to be repeated. The exam is administered by Pearson Vue.
  • After passing the exam, you will need to make sure your name is added to the nurse aide certification registry. Employers cannot legally hire you if your name is not on that registry. To keep your CNA certification valid, you must renew it every two years. In order to renew the certification, you will have to show proof of employment through the past two years. If you allow the certification to expire, then you will have to retake the CNA exam before you can get the certification reinstated.

Choosing CNA Classes

To begin your career as a CNA, your first step will be to get the classes and training that you need for CNA certification. There are a number of facilities that provide the approved CNA training. A few of the options for CNA classes in Washington that you could choose include the following:

Getting Financial Assistance for CNA Classes

In the state of Washington, CNA classes are more expensive than most other states. For that reason, some people may find it financially difficult to get the training that they need to start their new career. If you are worried that you will not be able to afford the CNA classes, then you will be glad to know that there is help. Many different medical employers in the state are willing to work with you. All that you would need to do is agree to work for the facility for a few years and then they will either pay all of your class costs or most of them. This can make a tremendous difference in being able to afford your CNA certification.

When you are ready to get started following a career in CNA certification, then there is nothing stopping you. If you live in Washington state, be sure to follow the proper regulations and you can become a CNA in less than a year!
