Getting Your New Jersey CNA Certification

Once you make the decision that this is the right career path for you, then you are a step closer to getting your CNA certification. To start with, you will need to determine what type of certified nurse aide you would like to become. In the state of New Jersey, there are two categories: standard CNA and long term care CNA. If you choose the latter category, then you will need to provide more information and obtain more training to be certified.

To become a general CNA, there are a few things you will need to do including the following:

  • Get started with the state of New Jersey by declaring yourself a candidate.
  • Begin CNA classes in New Jersey at one of the approved CNA programs in the state. Keep in mind that you will need to finish 75 hours of classes (that equals about 13 weeks.) Then, you will need to finish 100 hours of clinical training (that means real life work set up through the school you have chosen).
  • Take and pass the New Jersey CNA exam. You can find out how to do this here.
  • Have your fingerprints put on record at the New Jersey Board of Health as well as with the federal government.

If you choose to become CNA certified for long term care, you will need to choose from CNA programs that include 90 hours of classes  instead of the 75. This should include an extra 16 hours of clinical training as well. You will need to ensure that 69 of your CNA classes are devoted to long term care training. You will need to ensure that the programs you have chosen for long term care training have been approved by the state of New Jersey or you will not be able to obtain CNA certification.
