Not many!

To make the whole process of training, testing and registering as a CNA in Michigan a bit easier for you, we’ve put together some important information that will help you on your journey towards becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Michigan CNA Training Requirements

In Michigan, the curriculum includes 75 hours of CNA classes. This curriculum is a general guideline and can be adapted by different facilities to accommodate their needs, but it must be a minimum of 75 hours. The curriculum for CNA classes in Michigan can include, but is not limited to:

  • Seizure information
  • Hand washing
  • Standard and universal precautions
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Dealing with burns, bleeding and unconscious residents
  • Personal care including mouth care, hands and nails
  • Foot care
  • Bathing and toileting
  • Dressing and bed operation
  • Measuring and taking temperatures
  • Hydration and nutrition
  • Body mechanics and back care
  • Mechanical and manual lifts
  • Walker and cane assistance
  • Wheelchairs

You will find that facilities like the Community Colleges offer incentives and financial help to those who are in need, whereas smaller CNA programs might not. The cost for the CNA training program runs an average of about $500, which includes a uniform (scrubs) as well as textbooks and supplies.

The Red Cross offers a course in Michigan that is free of charge and it lasts between six to twelve weeks. All state approved programs are recognized at all healthcare facilities across the state, although licenses themselves may or may not be transferable in the event that you move to another state.

Examination Requirements

As a part of your examination for your certificate, you will have to take an exam. The exam has two parts, both a clinical skills test and a written (or oral) test. You will have to pass both in order to receive your certificate and become a CNA in Michigan. The skills that you will be tested on are as follows:

  • Hand washing
  • Using a bedpan
  • Bed making
  • Blood pressure
  • Catheter care
  • Change of position
  • Dressing
  • Feeding
  • Hair and nail care
  • Measuring a drainage bag and recording information
  • Taking height and weight measurements and recording information
  • Mouth care
  • Partial bed bath
  • Perianal care
  • Range of motion
  • Pulse and respiratory problems
  • Transfers and lifts

You can find more detailed information about the clinical skills testing here. To help you with your CNA classes, Prometric, the company who is responsible for administering the exam has put together a great listing of commonly missed checkpoints, or mistakes that have been made frequently when students are performing their skills evaluation.

When you are ready to take your test, you can fill out the registration form and submit it. You will be notified by mail of when you will be testing to become a certified nursing assistant. You will also need to look for regional testing sites in your area.

Certification Requirements

Once you have passed your exam, you will be added to the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry. Your registration will come up for renewal every two years and you will have to have worked at least one 8 hour shift during that time in order to maintain active status.
